Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
The patients of Gallagher Dentistry & Facial Pain Center often have questions for the staff and dentists who serve the communities of Eden Prairie and Minneapolis, MN.
Why do I have bad breath?
Bad breath, or halitosis, may be caused by poor dental hygiene, certain foods, and lifestyle habits, such as smoking. Poor dental hygiene leaves food particles and bacteria in the mouth. Some foods, such as garlic, and alcoholic beverages may cause bad breath until the body processes the food or alcohol.
Should I brush and floss every day?
For proper oral hygiene, patients should brush their teeth twice a day and floss once a day.
Why do I need to floss if I brush my teeth every day? Brushing the teeth is not an effective method for removing food particles, plaque and bacteria from between the teeth. Patients who do not floss are at greater risk for gum disease and other oral health issues.
Amalgam (silver) fillings contain mercury. Are they safe?
The mercury in amalgam fillings is mixed with other metals, including zinc, tin, copper, and silver, to form a stable alloy. Research indicates that amalgam fillings are safe. Patients who may be concerned with amalgam fillings have other options for their fillings, including composite fillings.
Do I need to have a dental exam and cleaning every year?
Gallagher Dentistry & Facial Pain Center recommends that patients have a dental exam and cleaning at least two times each year. This helps the dentist identify oral health problems in the early stages before significant damage occurs.
What are the signs of gum disease?
Gum disease refers to two oral health conditions–gingivitis and periodontal disease. Signs of gum disease include bleeding gums after brushing, swollen gums, gums that have pulled away from the tooth and teeth that are loose.
What are the benefits of cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry gives patients in Eden Prairie and Minneapolis, MN, a more natural and beautiful smile. Cosmetic dentistry may be performed for aesthetic reasons or to repair oral health issues caused by gum disease or injury.
What are the benefits of porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers give the patient a more natural appearance. Unlike other veneers, porcelain veneers can be sculpted to match the natural shape of the patient’s teeth. Porcelain veneers typically last longer than other materials.
Are there treatments available for stained and discolored teeth?
Gallagher Dentistry & Facial Pain Center offers several treatments for patients with stained and discolored teeth. Teeth whitening procedures use a special gel to lighten the color of the natural teeth. Veneers are thin, colored materials that are permanently bonded to the teeth.
