Regular dental exams and cleanings are one of the best ways for patients to maintain their oral health. Our office recommends these appointments every three, four, or six months depending on what the patients dental needs are and how prone they may be to periodontal disease, decay, and tarter build up. Regular dental exams include a full examination by the dentist and dental hygienist. This includes an updating of your health history, a visual oral cancer screening, evaluation of the jaw joint, tooth wear, and evaluation for any decay and periodontal disease. At this time we will also be able to address any oral health concerns you may have.
For first time patients, the dental examination includes a complete review of your medical history, a discussion time with the dentist in order to address any concerns, a full evaluation of the mouth and full charting, any needed radiographs, and a review of any findings by the dentist. During the exam the dentist will also by evaluating and measuring the gum tissue in order to identify any concerns with periodontal disease. An evaluation will be made in order to identify the best type of cleaning for you; any treatment needed and if there are any priorities.
Following an exam or during an exam appointment a cleaning may be performed. This is the process of removing all of the tarter (the calcified/rocky plaque buildup) and plaque (the soft deposit) from your teeth. Plaque and tarter are full of living bacteria that contribute to periodontal disease and decay. The cleaning process may include the use of ultrasonic and hand instruments. During these appointments we also take extreme care to make sure you feel comfortable. Education is also an important addition to the cleaning appointment. Our office strives to educate and inform patients on how to best care for their teeth and gums leading to better oral health. After the appointment we like to set up your next dental cleaning and exam appointment in an effort to help you stay on the right track to better oral health.
